Securing a Windows XP Computer
Benjamin J. Higginbotham

Securing a Windows XP computer can be a daunting task. There are a slew of security suites out there from Symantec, McAfee, Zone Labs, and others, but which one should you choose? Which security suite is simply the best and why? The answer comes in the form of a company that most consumers have probably never heard of: Trend Micro.

Trend Micro is not a huge player in the consumer space, but they are a very large player in the Enterprise. Trend has a slew of products to protect small/medium business all the way up to enterprises with thousands and thousands of employees. Trend is known for their high-powered, cost effective, and easy to deploy solutions. How often do you hear of Dow Jones & Company, Texas Instruments, or Yamaha going offline due to a virus outbreak? You don?「どィび「t, and that?「どィび「s in part because they use Trend.

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 is their only consumer offering and has everything one would need to protect their personal PC from virus attacks: spyware, malware, adware, spam, WiFi intrusion, and Internet attacks. Other competing products such as Norton Security Suite 2006 have a bad tendency to really hog system resources and slow the entire computer down. PC-cillin does not suffer from the same bloating effect that other security suites have, and as a result your system will run just as fast as it did before you ever installed protection on it.

Features are only part of the story though. Security can be confusing and understanding what a firewall is doing, what ports go where and why a file is being marked as a virus can be hard for most consumers. Trend Micro has made all of these tasks extremely simple in PC-cillin 2006. Part of the power of PC-cillin, and for that matter all of the Trend product line, is that the program runs silently in the background, just doing its job. You don?「どィび「t get thousands of pop-ups indicating different things, it just runs. A single icon in your system tray protects your system from even the most violent virus outbreak, and you don?「どィび「t ever have to do a thing. PC-cillin will auto-update itself, will auto-patch itself, will auto-scan in real time, and it will do it all without ever interrupting your work. Norton, Panda, McAfee and Zone Alarm all throw window pop-ups, security alerts, and scanning windows on top of whatever work you?「どィび「re doing, and they all slow your system down while they do it.

Trend Micro?「どィび「s PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 is enterprise class security with consumer ease of use. This product simply leaves the others in the dust.
