Skype to European Cell Phones Makes the World Smaller
My brother-in-law,
Luke Watson, is a professional runner. Not a bad gig, but the considerable amount of international travel involved can lead to costly communications. However, he's managed to bring the international calling costs down to only pennies a minute from anywhere in the world by picking up a cell phone in Belguim with a free incoming call plan paired with a request to friends and family to call him using Skype.
Luke gave me permission to republish an email he sent out to friends and family explaining how to use Skype to get in touch with him:
Hey everyone,
I will make this short because the keyboards here have the keys in different places and its hard to type. I just want you all to know how to reach me here in Leuven, Belgium where I will be for the rest of July. Email works of course but we do not have it in the residence so I will only check it sporadically.
I have a cell phone here and the number is:
People calling from within Belgium:
dial 0487 ___ ___
People calling from US lines without skype:
dial 011 32 487 ___ ___
Skype: dial +32 487 ___ ___
How to use Skype (calling from US):
Your best bet is to use a phone card or better yet Skype to call me. So go to any electronics store where they sell computer stuff and get a Skype-compatible headset-- my friend Mitch bought one today for about 5?ã‚Ć. Then go to
www.skype.com and download the program. You then will need to buy Skype credit so that you can make Skype Out calls. Put in like 10 bucks and it will last quite a while ( cost is like 2 cents per minute). Then plug in your headset; make sure the volume is turned up; and give me a call! In skype you will put in +32 487 __ ___ for the number. That is my Belgian cell phone and I get free incoming calls.
Thanks,
Belgium just got a lot closer to Minnesota.
