Better Know a Content Source - Meebo.com's MeeboMe Chat Widget
This is the seventh in a 435-part series (give or take) on sources of syndicatable content for websites. Sites covered in this series offer tools to publish content from their site onto your own site.
Meebo.com's MeeboMe Widget
Meebo is a web based chat application that aggregates popular instant messaging clients into one browser window, allowing you to chat simultaneously with Yahoo, AOL, Google (jabber), and MSN IM users without installing any of the client applications.
I've become a fan of Meebo since
hearing the founders discuss their service on BusinessWeek's Cutting-Edge podcast with Heather Green.
Chat is a powerful tool, but becomes a burden when my system tray starts filling up with applications I may or may not use on any given day. And it's soooo annoying when client IM applications come bundled with extra crap like toolbars. A recent install of Yahoo's IM client came with the Yahoo Toolbar, two new desktop and two new quicklauch toolbar icons. I don't remember having a chance to opt-out of any of this junk. </rant>
So, Meebo solves this by eliminating the need for client applications. Very cool. Just create a Meebo account and input your various IM profiles to get started.
And as of today, you can embed Meebo directly into your web page using their new
MeeboMe service. This turns Meebo into a free live chat application that can be installed in minutes. In this case, the content you're syndicating is live access to yourself.
If you'd like to give it a try, click over to
my bio page and send me a message. It looks like I may be able to embed the Meebo code directly into this post, so let's see what happens:
Looks like it worked.
