Flickr has added a drag and drop mapping feature to their popular photo sharing site, demonstrated below.
Flickr's Organizr console - previously used primarily for batch editing photos - has a new mapping feature using Yahoo Maps. Yahoo is the parent company of Flickr. Users select a photo or group of photos taken at a given location, then drag them onto the map to add location data to the photos.
In the example below, I've zoomed the Yahoo map onto the top of Grouse Mountain just to the North of Vancouver, BC, then dragged a photo of myself to that peak:
That photo now has latitude and longitude coordinates associated with it based on where I placed in on the map. Yahoo's mapping is smart enough to add the place name associated with the geocode, so the photo now includes the following copy: "Taken in North Vancouver, British Columbia"
Here is what it looks like on the
photo's page:
The right column has the "Taken in North Vancouver, British Columbia" copy along with a map link that generates the pop-up shown in the above photo.
Flickr has also added a map interface for geocoded photos.
For those too lazy to geocode their photos on Flickr, or simply can't remember where they were when the took a photo, a solution is not far away. GPS enabled cameras can geo-stamp photos for you, and Flickr will be able to read this information and properly place your photos without any additional work on your part.

Flickr pictures are not just pictures, but art. That?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s the beauty of it.
