SMO: What is Social Media Optimization?
Ed Kohler

Lee Odden provides an interesting look at the new online marketing strategy going by the name SMO or Social Media Optimization. How can businesses use new social sites like MySpace and YouTube to market their businesses?

Online Marketing Blog ?Ǭª New Rules for Social Media Optimization

"Consider this session from the recent ad:tech conference in Chicago called ?¢‚Ǩ?ìAdvertising with Social Media?¢‚Ǩ?ì. It presented some interesting opportunities and challenges for advertisers regarding MySpace, YouTube and other social/consumer generated media. Advertisers recognize the reach of social media, but aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t quite sure how to take advantage of it."
Three options for marketing that come to mind are:

1. Buy your way in with advertising. It's pretty simple to understand that you need to get in front of your prospective customers wherever they happen to be hanging out online.

2. Participate in the networking site. This takes more work, and has to be done by people who understand the etiquette of the networking site.

3. Leverage the power of the network. Run a contest to create a new commercial for your company using YouTube's platform. Reward people who upload photos pimping your company to Flickr. Create a flash badge for MySpace users.

How have you seen businesses market themselves using social networking sites?

SMO in my estimation is simply branding, keywords and most importantly, managing all those profiles, links, activity, etc...!!

Is that true that participating in all social media sites is nothing but Social Media Optimization??

Bharath, participating is a good way to look at it. Signing up with sites isn't enough.

Let me be short and simple about SMO..This is the thing that I have understood so far..please correct me if I am wrong..

Social Media Optimization is nothing but driving traffic from sources other than search engines..
