Anchorage Daily News Backs Network Neutrality
The largest daily newspaper in Alaska - Senator Ted Stevens' home state - published an editorial yesterday backing network neutrality. A short excerpt:
Net neutrality - Anchorage Daily News - Our View
"Net neutrality is hardly a heavy-handed government intrusion into the free-wheeling world of the Internet. It is a simple antitrust rule that protects consumers by keeping Internet companies from exploiting their control over connections. Congress should get ahead of the curve and ensure net neutrality before abuses begin to spread.
BOTTOM LINE: Net neutrality is a good idea. Sen. Ted Stevens should support it."
Having lived in Alaska myself, I've found the state to be very progressive on technology issues like this. In fact, when going to school at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in the mid-90's, many of my classmates lived in cabins with no running water, yet did have access to the Internet. Some of this had to do with the geography of the area: it's tough to provide water trough permafrost laden ground, but running phone or cable lines is no big deal.
Is Internet access more valuable than water? It appeared to be so for many marginally-groomed students.
