I was at Yahoo! HQ earlier this week and noticed that the sprinkler heads are purple:
It turns out that a LOT of stuff is purple at Yahoo, including a cow at the reception desk. While purple is apparently a Yahoo color and a color they take some pride in, it's not a color I associated with Yahoo before my visit. Before this week, the color red used in Yahoo's logo was the color I most associated with Yahoo followed up by a key lime green I apparently chose for my My.Yahoo.com homepage back in the day.
How much of a role does color play in branding for you? Do McDonald's arches have to be golden to be recognized? How about the NBC peacock's rainbow tail feathers?

Perhaps it's an endorsement of Seth Godin's book "The Purple Cow."
