Colors and Branding
Ed Kohler
I was at Yahoo! HQ earlier this week and noticed that the sprinkler heads are purple:

Purple Sprinklers

It turns out that a LOT of stuff is purple at Yahoo, including a cow at the reception desk. While purple is apparently a Yahoo color and a color they take some pride in, it's not a color I associated with Yahoo before my visit. Before this week, the color red used in Yahoo's logo was the color I most associated with Yahoo followed up by a key lime green I apparently chose for my My.Yahoo.com homepage back in the day. How much of a role does color play in branding for you? Do McDonald's arches have to be golden to be recognized? How about the NBC peacock's rainbow tail feathers?

Perhaps it's an endorsement of Seth Godin's book "The Purple Cow."

Actually, yes, I think color has a lot to do with branding / brand recognition. Starbucks would not be the "same" if their logo was orange. A Gap sign being black with neon green lettering. However there is some fudge room. Think of the NBC peacock logo as a grey / see through version of itself in the lower right hand side of your tv screen while your favorite NBC show is on. Just because it is not in full color, does that mean that you are utterly confused as to which station you are watching? Not usually... unless you are like my father and think that every station should show all of the Law and Orders all the time. (He gets kind of frustrated when CBS has none) Anyway, point is that mainly and I would say in most cases brand / logo and color all go together.
