Introduction: Technology Evangelist Netcast Episode 5 for January 5th 2007 - PRE CES coverage.
Benjamin Higginbotham: Welcome to the technology evangelist audio Netcast episode 5 from Las Vegas, Nevada my name is Benjamin Higginbotham with me is Ed Kohler we made it safe and sound
Ed Kohler: Yes we did
Benjamin Higginbotham: For a moment there we weren’t sure what was going to happen.
Ed Kohler: Yeah we had a little turbulence today and I don’t mind turbulence when you way up high the sky 30,000 feet or so going dip a few feet no big deal. When you have the run way right in front of you and same thing happens?
Benjamin Higginbotham: It was actually, its very rare were actually sit in the plane and go and you actually get scared, like this is not good. We hit the run way by actually as we were coming on the run way we were bouncing up and down and I said I turned to him and I said this is not going be a soft landing.
Ed Kohler: No.
Benjamin Higginbotham: And it was not and we hit with the right rear tire first tip the whole plane to the right, the right wing came about half a foot from hitting the run way and snapping off, I don’t know if its snap off but it makes for better story. The plane then over compensated in weird like the other tires hit down and we weird way to the left and we actually had other passengers that they we knew there would happen to be left side of the plane and they said that we came within three feet of running off the run way.
Ed Kohler: hmm, yeah we have to do some pretty heavy “S turns and high speeds on the runway.
Benjamin Higginbotham: It was freaky I think it was.
Benjamin Higginbotham: This is the first time that I have ever been on a flight, okay let me rework on this, that I can remember at least with someone lost their launch and more in that multiple people.
Ed Kohler: Oh yeah
Benjamin Higginbotham: That’s how good it was when multiple people are hurling in the bags in front of you, something is not good.
Ed Kohler: Yeah I was getting nervous when the plane finally gained control I was kind of flushed and so I turned on, my air to try to get a little cool down but it was that would a good idea because next you can know I was smelling bile.
Benjamin Higginbotham: It was disgusting,
Ed Kohler: It was nasty,
Benjamin Higginbotham: So we are here safe in town,
Ed Kohler: Yeah we run the ground now and we were up in the hill hmm looking out over the sky line of Vegas
Benjamin Higginbotham: CES press stuff starts tomorrow and that’s going to be a lot of fun and we were going to kind a get of feel for the show, tonight we are going to post a kind of pre-show video and that’s going to be up in little bit, we were doing a couple of cool and interesting things with this particular show but we haven’t done before I don’t know for a work frankly but its going to be fun to test, we will give it a shot give it the old college try and the first one is for these audio Netcasts we got us Ed and I both have Skype accounts and we both got Skype voice mail and now that my voice mail is active if you like more information that go back to the technology evangelist read the blog about my voice mail, but if you want to Skype, Skype us and leave us a audio voice mail message and say who you are and the product you like to see and if you want to ask a question about that product we will do our best to go on the show floor and ask that question and then incorporate your question and the answer into the audio Netcasts.
Ed Kohler: Yeah like, I remember one thing we learned last year is we would get comments on the blog of why didn’t you ask this? You know, you can’t think of everything you can possibly ask and something where, lay down some some challenges for us, if you were there if you had a chance.
Benjamin Higginbotham: It’s like STFU you asking.
Ed Kohler: So put words in your mouth, okay?
Benjamin Higginbotham: Exactly
Ed Kohler: So what would you ask if you had a chance to be on the show floor at CES this year? Send us a voice mail, give us the questions.
Benjamin Higginbotham: My voice mail information as its all my contact information is available www.technologyevangelist.com/ben.html or you can click on my beautiful new picture that’s on the blog, that’s pretty cool and that will guide you to my contact info. Ed’s information is available at www.technologyevangelist.com/ed.html and you can Skype both of us and leave us a voice mail from there we will be checking both of the accounts throughout the day and that brings us to the video portion because, we were doing 1080P video and we thought it will be fun to people incorporate video calls into this. Unfortunately Skype doesn’t allow for video voice mail which is a pretty big downfall if you ask me I mean, I don’t this is like stop innovating once they sold they basically stopped doing anything cool but that’s not it, you know that. So we were using SightSpeed which is actually way cooler than Skype in my humble opinion and you can actually send us a video voice mail, what you can do is download the free SightSpeed client at www.sightspeed.com, you are going to need a webcam and some sort of audio. We prefer if you have a better microphone so we can hear you better but you know whatever we are not too picky and go to the Create Tab and create a message and send it to video mail at videomail@technologyevangelist.com and full instructions on how to do that will be posted at the blog a little bit later tonight, may be tomorrow. So you will be able to do that and what we will do is one just like with the audio Netcasts, we will take your video requests and we will incorporate those into the video updates, so If you want to know more for example about the Trio 680 and you want to know what kind of GSM radio uses, tell us who you are, tell us who’d you like to see and give us this question, 30 seconds or less and we will put it on the video stream, it will be really cool.
Ed Kohler: And if you have not used SightSpeed before it’s really similar to Skype, they are different programs but similar in lot ways, if you have used a webcam before you are not going to any problems at all figure out how to use it, we love to see and hear from you that way.
Benjamin Higginbotham: I say the big difference between the two Skype is audio with video tacked on and SightSpeed was designed around video, so it really good at the video portion but its kind of they added the PSTN audio type stuff on later, they just approach it differently and I think from the video standpoint SightSpeed just kicks the pants oof the Skype’s, but that’s my personal opinion.
Ed Kohler: Yeah okay another thing OPML
Benjamin Higginbotham: Oh I told you blue, I had this, we had this list here in front of me, I am supposed to follow when I skipped over OPML completely.
Ed Kohler: We have an outline.
Benjamin Higginbotham: I know what was I doing?
Ed Kohler: its on paper so Ben..
Benjamin Higginbotham: Its analog, I can’t deal with that
Ed Kohler: Its right next to its computer, why would he look at it. So but OPML, we tried to cover the show as best we can but we are only human and lot of other humans out there lot of people are cought on this show so we dicided one good way to cover the show if you really want to get inundaited with everything that’s going on out here, you would be subscribed to every blog that you possibly can, that’s going to be covered in this show.
Benjamin Higginbotham: You going to get hit with CES stuff it’s a big and awesome
Ed Kohler: Yup, so go to www.technologyevangelist.com look for a post about OPML or you can search for OPML or you can probably step in yeah type in www.technologyevangelist.com/opml you will be able to find it there as well and you will be able to right click and save (Ctrl+Click and save for Apple crowd there) this OPML file to your computer, then import it to bloglines or Google reader whatever RSS reader you happen to prefer and next thing you know you going to have a whole boat load of sites that are cover in this show. So that something I put together tonight lot of copy and pasting going around here and I think you find it valuable.
Benjamin Higginbotham: And for those of going -- what the heck does OPML stand for? That would be the Outline Processor Markup Language, basically it’s a file of files.
Ed Kohler: Yeah, its really a feed of feeds.
Benjamin Higginbotham: Yeah there we go that’s much better there.
Ed Kohler: You could actually if you ever import or export, say if you have used bloglines and you decided tomorrow that you are I am sick of blogline and switch to Google reader, when you export your feeds from bloglines and import to Google reader that is an OPML file and this is just one thats...
Ed Kohler: An XOPML file?.
Benjamin Higginbotham: Its a OPML file.
Ed Kohler: There we go.
Benjamin Higginbotham: Cool, so I think that’s all we have for this Netcast. Tomorrow we are going try to see if we can get Kerry Anne in and we are going Skype her in live in another conversation. We got actually we got another blue snow ball for her microphone and we set up with the computer access so that will kind of cool, and get her pics for CES and she wants to see and what not and I think we will coordinate with that.
Ed Kohler: Right Thank You.
Benjamin Higginbotham: Yup, we will talk to you tomorrow.
