Daily Audio Netcast - CES Unveiled and TE adds mobile video
Technology Evangelist Team
Today was CES Unveiled, an event for press to get to see some products before the CES Expo actually starts. Got some good video interviews which we will be posting in the coming days. It was interesting to see the number of video netcasts vs the number of traditional media.

Send your comments or CES questions to use via Skype! We'll ask them of the manufacturers and post the questions and answers here on the site! Skype benjaminhigginbotham or ed.kohler with your name, product and question.

Transcript:

Introduction: Technology Evangelist Netcast Episode 6 for January 6th 2007 – TE goes mobile video and new media is king at CES 2007.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Welcome to Netcast-6, I am Benjamin Higginbotham with me we’ve got Cariannas well as Ed Kohler, welcome everyone.

Ed Kohler: Hello!

Cariann: Hi.

Benjamin Higginbotham: So, Ed is with me here in Las Vegas, Cariannis Skyping into the conversation from Minneapolis, Minnesota, which kind of cool thing. We’ve got couple of different items on our talk today. We just got back from the CES Unveiled, the press event for this show. I got to tell you, It is pretty cool.

Ed Kohler: Yeah, it was there are a lot of people there, but their scale is little bit more manageable than the actual trade show itself.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Being that as one room.

Ed Kohler: Right, one room.

Cariann: Cheaters.

Ed Kohler: There are some really cool stuff. It doesn’t have much of the automotive stuff that you get at the big show, but that’s kind of fine with me it’s not really my scene.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Yup, the neat thing is that it was about a 3:1 ratio of New Media versus Traditional Media. In another words there were tons and tons of video Net Casters in there and you just saw the little Sony HDV cameras and they are just little eddie-beddi cameras, just everywhere.

Ed Kohler: Yeah, people everyone had a camera in their hands or some sort of device to document things, of course everyone was there and reporter, but we didn’t see big crews.

Benjamin Higginbotham: No, you saw couple, there were couple. They had their full lights and they had just like the mega super cameras with full on their boxes and they were cool, but I just thought it’s really neat just the idea that, new media has grown so much since last year. Even last year, I mean there wasn’t merely this much new media last year. It’s like 100 fold increase..

Ed Kohler: But, it will interesting to see what effect that has on the perspective that come out of the show. We’ve different types of people covering it are they gonna say that exact same things or they got new perspectives. .

Benjamin Higginbotham: Exactly, I don’t know, looking at the list…

Ed Kohler: I was just gonna say that we got an article yesterday, we talked yesterday about how people are going to, we are giving people the opportunity to call in using Skype or using SiteSpeed to send us video questions about what they like to see covered at the show and, Andy Anderson from VOIP Watch was nice enough to write an article, where he mentioned that we are doing that and he actually has been sitting on the top protecting me through out most of the day today and so that’s been nice traffic coming through from their things , but I hope that kind of get conversation started about new types of conversation that are going on now.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Absolutely, I think its kind of meet that way, able conference with Cariann in Minneapolis.

Cariann: No that I’ve said whole lots far, but that’s okay.

Benjamin Higginbotham: But still we are able to link you in real time and it sounds better than a phone conversation. I wouldn’t say it’s just good as be in a person, but its still pretty good.

Cariann: I am much cuter you in-person.

Benjamin Higginbotham: It’s really neat been able to take your video mail questions and post them into these some these Netcast, while editors working on them, right now actually, he has given us big thumbs up. I am trying to get some video Netcast out there tonight, so that we can get some content out there for you and we’ve already got one SiteSpeed video mail and we got one Skype audio. So that, I mean not a lot, but this show hasn’t started yet, so…

Ed Kohler: Yeah, It goes the show at least someone is listening, right?

Benjamin Higginbotham: Absolutely, I think some people are also waiting for proof that yes we actually will post this, we are not just yanking their chain, you know what I mean.

Ed Kohler: Yeah.

Benjamin Higginbotham: I don’t want necessarily say final, but the last mark on the little pad or paper that I am supposed to follow is a

Cariann: like you ever do…

Benjamin Higginbotham: I know, can you believe it, we are actually organized.

Cariann: What’s wrong with you?

Benjamin Higginbotham: I don’t know, for the last time on the piece of paper at least, is that we’ve added a new feature to technology evangelist today and that is kind of reverse of what we are doing and that is the ability to for you to get our videos on your cell phone. This gets kind of Geeky in technical, but we got a Geeky technical crowd it’s alright. If you got a cell phone that supports RTSP 3GP streaming…

Ed Kohler: What’s that Ben?

Benjamin Higginbotham: Yeah.

Cariann: Can I ask you a question at this point?

Benjamin Higginbotham: Sure.

Cariann: How do I know if my cell phone supports that or not?

Benjamin Higginbotham: Well, actually good question. The Trio 700p line, the palm line does support it, the Kinoma Player supports it, the Windows Mobile 5 line. So the 700 WWX things like that do not support 3GP streaming at this time, they do not support any MPEG stuff. Yeah hopefully some listener out there will tell me this is the player you need, but the core player doesn’t do it. I haven’t found any player that doesn’t on Window Mobile yet, but Palm does it, Kinoma player does it and I think Nokia phones do it as well.

Ed Kohler: So, here is how we have it setup, if you browse to Technology Evangelist from your Trio 700p or other supported phones, we have it setup to where it will all detect your phone and redirect you to a mobile version of our website. At that site we are listing the top post or the most recent post and the most recent video on that page and you can view either of those by clicking on those and also there are links to taking you to a larger directory of recent posts and recent videos.

Benjamin Higginbotha: I just realized the proper timing in Skype conversation, everyone just heard the peping - peping noise.

Ed Kohler: Yeah.

Cariann: No.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Oh well we heard it on our site.

Ed Kohler: Yeah.

Benjamin Higginbotham: So, one of my user just came online and that note does in our Netcast.

Ed Kohler: That proves we are using Skype.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Yeah, absolutely.

Cariann: Right now, we are for your very eyes.

Benjamin Higginbotham: You see its cool, because on the new mobile page go in back to the mobile page, just go on to mobile page, you can just click on the video and actually watch a lot, I almost at live stream, but you can watch a streaming video of that right on you mobile device. So, if you are at the CES show floor and you are just kind of looking for cool stuff and you just kind of wanna take a quick peek at what’s hot on the show for, looking something neat. Watch video really quick or look at one of the blog posts.

Ed Kohler: Yeah. If you are sitting in a DMV this week-end, your drivers license renewed and you are still want to keep up on what’s going on in Las Vegas.

Cariann: Awesome.

Benjamin Higginbothamr: Yeah, its gonna be a fun show I think, we got some neat fun things going on, we got a lot of mobile video netcasters, its fun. Yeah, I think it will be interesting to see how the bloggers are, obviously there have been bloggers here for years, but its growing it seems like this year is really big year for that and its just interesting to see how different they cover stories than what you would find in main stream media source like, another example that would be on LIVEdigitally which is Jeremy Toeman’s blog, he has a story on his blog. His first story about CES 2007 is at the airport where first getting in and that kind of thing you would never see in New York Times tech page or something, but it brings a different perspective to stories that I think a lot of people find interesting, because this is really end - to - end coverage.

Benjamin Higginbothamr: Yup , absolutely.

Benjamin Higginbothamr: I have an actually had a change with the Macworld seen it all and having not prepped Cariann at all on this. I am gonna ask you a question and that is…

Cariann: Cool.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Have you seen anything new or heard anything on the rumor sites regarding any Macintosh stuff yet.

Cariann: I have not, but as we are Skyping for this particular show, if you will. I do have the ability now to look up couple of my favorite websites here and see if there is anything interesting on there. I just had to send of my little brother today on a little 8 months trek and he has never really been away from the house more than say two hours or so, so that was kind of big to do in the household, so I haven’t had a chance unfortunately to check some of my favorite sites.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Oh that’s not, like I said prep yourself. Good bye to Matt by the way.

Benjamin Higginbotham: Yeah so, Ed anything else on your?

Ed Kohler: Nothing also on my end. I guess one of the thing would be if we have photos going up on the site and if you click on photos that we are taking through out the show, It will take you to our flicker account and you will be able to get Unveil set from 2007 CES and follow a lot of stuff that we don’t necessarily have time to blog about, but drop a comment on the flicker account or ask us about that, send us a question and may be we could tell you what that photo was all about.

Benjamin Higginbotham: So, we are working again some content produced for you guys, getting some stuff in the can so we can get lot of us on the show floor. In the mean time we will talk tomorrow.Thank you so much for joining us Cariann.

Cariann: You Bet.

Benjamin Higginbotham: We will talk to you tomorrow as well. See you.
