Adobe Announces Mobile Flash Online Video Capabilities
Adobe announced today that Flash Lite will support playback of Flash video on mobile devices:
"At the 3GSM World Congress, Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that support for video will be integrated in the next generation of Adobe® Flash Lite™ software, Adobe’s award-winning Flash® Player runtime specifically designed for mobile phones. Flash Lite 3, expected to be available in the first half of 2007, will bring the Adobe Flash Player video format from the desktop to mobile phones and devices, enabling operators, handset manufacturers and developers alike to deliver more compelling and engaging experiences to mobile users."
The first thing that comes to mind is kids on school buses watching YouTube videos to and from school. That sounds cooler than sharing a Walkman with a classmate like I had to do back in the day.
Beyond entertainment, one application came to mind right away: real estate videos. Imagine driving around town checking out houses for sale, stopping in front of a house that interests you, then pulling up a Flash video of the property narrated by the selling agent or owner.
How do you think Flash for the phone will be used?
Michael, I think this case has more to do with increasing access to content that already exists by providing a player for mobile devices. If people using any popular desktop or mobile platform can play Flash files, having a Flash version available provides close to universal playback compatibility.
Is it the best choice for mobile? I think the jury's still out on that, but I'm sure others will have an opinion.

What are the advantages of using Flash Video (flv) files on mobile phones over other forms? Presumably the flv format offers better compression?
