Jim Wuthrich, Senior Vice President of Electronic Sell-Through at Warner Brothers offered a peak into how digital distribution of video content could change the variety of videos available to consumers.
At this time, Warner Bros. publishes approximately 1500 titles, which they feel is about as many as they can profitably justify based on the DVD as a distribution medium. However, they Wuthrich mentioned that they're sitting on 6600 titles (an additional 5100) they potentially could release if there was a business model to justify it.
Enter digital distribution of long-tail video content.
However, they're still determining the most appropriate way to distribute this content to consumers where it's easy for them to navigate the flood of additional titles.
Other studios, of course, face similar issues.
On mash-ups: Wuthrich mentioned that his studio sees value in mash-ups created from his studio's films since it reminds people of the original film and builds loyalty. The trick is, "figuring out where to draw the line."
