Fashion Friday - Episode 1
Benjamin J. Higginbotham

Fashion may not be a topic you would think goes with Technology, but that is exactly why we feel we need to bring it up. Our new feature, Fashion Friday, addresses fashion for the tech set.

Aaron Pecha: Hello and welcome, my name is Aaron Pecha and I am here with Technology Evangelist. As a group, we all got together and decided that there is a problem facing the tech set these days and that problem is our image. When anybody utters the letters “IT” the first thing that most people think of is Poindexter from “Revenge of the Nerds”, that movie was made well, we'll get to that later. That’s not what we are, we never really were that, but we aren’t anymore. What we are is ever increasingly the backbone of modern society. We are the ones who allow everyone to do what it is they do.

Now, even for that, for all of the times that Judy and HR has crashed the entire server room, trying to upload pictures of her cat, we are the geeks, well I say no more. I understand that you just been notified of 10 new e-mails, all of your phones are ringing and you just been twittered 65 times by Scoble alone, but how about you stick with us for a few more minutes? Do something for yourself on a Friday and hey, you will probably just like what you see in the mirror, that much more.

All right, welcome to our fun little style segment which we haven’t quite named yet, but we are working on that. Now, we are going to start off with the four basic principles in times, you actually have to wear clothing. At work, at home, out with your friends and out at something that you have to be fancy and dressed up, such as a company function or if you go to the orchestra, something like that, I don’t know what your hobbies are, but that doesn’t really matter.

Now, I am going to start in the office and for those of you who have a set uniform at work with a shirt with a company logo on it, that makes everything easier, because you don’t have to worry about what you wear to work everyday. So, rest of us though who work in an office, sitting in a cubical, we may have to worry about trying to figure out what to wear in the morning. Now, the first rule that I have is to wear clothing that fits you, if you wear clothing that fits, it will make you look so much better. Now, if you dress somewhere along these lines [audio gap] it doesn’t look so good, people will think that your brain doesn’t work and they won’t believe that you have a masters in IT, whereas, if you dress somewhere along these lines [audio gap] then people will understand your brain works and they will actually listen to you.

Now, when you are buying clothing for the first time when you are making sure that you have a business outfit, start with something simple, start with a neutral colored pant, I have done today in a charcol gray, because you can wear it with pretty much anything and your shoes, you don’t have to worry about, just wear black shoes. I have gone through and I put it together with a light green shirt for a pop of color and then brought a tie and that’s mostly black with some gray stripes to bring together the pant and the shirt together into a cohesive outfit. Now then, the next place we have to go is home and we will have some fun there.

OK, now we are back at home. Now, there is only so many different things you can really be doing while you are at home, like you are sitting on your computer on iTunes, re-downloadings, "Since You've Been Gone" for the 1,000th time because you don’t want your friends to make fun of you whenever they come over or you're lounging. Lounging is pretty much a conglomeration of things, such as sitting on the couch doing nothing, playing video games, watching movies, like "The Notebook", because you know you love to sit and watch that movie alone. Now, in situations where you are at home, sweats can be fine, if you are exercising or working around the house, say fixing a leaking faucet. [audio gap] But, living in them is pretty much a no-no.

Now see, a good lounging outfit is something that is versatile, it is something that’s comfortable, but you can also leave the house at any moment. Say your friends call you up, because “you know what? Hey, we haven’t seen in a while, let’s go hang out at a bar”, perfect now, what we want to do is start with something that’s comfortable, because you are at home, but it is versatile, like your favorite t-shirt. This is mine, it is got a funny statement on it, I get a lot of looks for it, yours might be "Han Shot First", who knows? But, the point is it is your favorite shirt or it is just a t-shirt that’s simple and clean, remember clean. Now, this one has a couple of holes in it, but it is lived in and you can deal with that.

Now, if you want to go some place, somewhat upscale, you really don’t have to do much to it, because a t-shirt and blazer is something that is actually acceptable these days. Now, if you are to take this and simply add a jacket on to it, thustily, you now have something that’s respectable to wear out in public. You can wear it to a bar, you could wear it anywhere you felt like going. You got extra pockets for whatever you need, but you really don’t need to put anything in there, we'll deal with that later, but it is simple and if you pair with a nice pair of jeans clean, also clean, then what you have is a decent way to be out in about, now you have made some steps forward. Now, we will talk about something else. Being out when you have to dress up.

All right folks we got one last thing to talk about today and that is the suit that you are going to wear for a formal event. Do you not have a suit? Why not? What's wrong with you? Shame on you. Well, you go and have to buy one. You don’t know where to buy one? We are going to deal with that next week, because I don’t have that kind of time here. For now though, stick with me. I have taken a brown suite, because brown is a nice neutral color along with gray or black or navy. Now, sense this as a dual tone blue print striping as we look at the nice close up pan, you will notice that I have taken and brought this color with a blue shirt and a tie that has color of the suite and the colors of the pin striping and the shirt, everything working together as one. As we do look down, we will notice that the hem on the pants are cuffed, if you do not want a cuffed hem, simply don’t get it cuffed, get it hidden hem, just talk to your tailor about it, they will be able to hook you up.

For that though, that is all from me this week. So, I will see you next week as we talked about how to buy a suit, how to tie a tie and how to shine your shoes. Until then, I am Aaron Pecha, good night.
