If I Started a Blog Today . . .
Ed Kohler

. . . I'd . . .

1. Use Wordpress.org as the platform.

2. Host it with a reliable host like MediaTemple.

3. Burn the site's feed with FeedBurner.

4. Install a comments subscription plugin.

5. Install a "recent comments" plugin.

6. Install "comments relish" to thank first time commenters.

7. Create a custom, professional, design for the site.

8. Install WP-Cache so I'm ready for the day the site gets a spike in traffic.

9. Write, write, write.

10. Announce the site to my network of friends using Twitter, Facebook, etc.

What would you add?

Since you're currently using Movable Type; and out of curiosity...why wouldn't you use MT?

I would also worry a lot about the titles of my post.

11) Become an active member of MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog

12) Try to get interviews....try to get guestposts

13) Network in the realworld. Think Barcamp, Podcamp, Tech Cocktail, or just a local bloggers

14) Get SEOed if possible...make sure I was registered in major 4 engines.

Interesting post!

Launch when you already have some content.

Wow, great additional tips. Carla, as you could probably tell from the time it took your comment to post, MT isn't the most elegant solution today. But the biggest reason would be the access to a much more active developer community that's cranking out useful plugins at an incredible rate.

Why not use Joomla?

7. Posted by: Ed Kohler on November 13, 2007 10:47 AM:

Marco, how does Joomla stand up vs. Wordpress for developer community size? And how about for integration with 3rd party publishing options like Flickr, YouTube, etc? It seems like the first integrations I see are put together for Wordpress, then Blogger, these days.

Nathan's 11 & 14 are good enough to repeat! As is Aaron's. The idea being to start the blog without exposing it to work out some of the kinks, get a feel and a flow, and build up some content.

I personally try to post two comments on related topics to every blog post that I write. This gets me out there, building relationships with other bloggers, and supporting their efforts. Kind of like a voluntary pyramid scheme!

Personally, I'd use a typepad like solution so that I don't have to worry the details. But, I'm willing to sacrifice the control that hosting WordPress or some similar solution would provide.
