Things I Haven't Seen in a Long Time
Ed Kohler

When was the last time you:

1. Watched a friend buy a newspaper so he could browse the classifieds?

2. Heard a land-line phone ring at a friend's house?

3. Heard a dial-up modem connect?

4. Watched someone go to a bank teller to withdrawal cash?

5. Bought a book on a computing related topic?

6. Used the printed Yellow Pages?

7. Received a link from a friend with driving directions from MapQuest?

8. Turned on the TV rather than going to the web for more information on a breaking news story?

9. Watched a full hour of television with commercials?

10. Bought music on a CD?

Cha-cha-cha-cha changes . . .

#3 at work because our accounting system is so old, it's the only way that is available to send the information.
#6 as a cheap monitor riser

Funny, with the exception of #1 and 4 I've seen all of those things in the last two weeks.

When I got coffee on Monday the ATM at Dunn Bros had a dial-up modem inside of it. I still think that one counts!

Ed, go to Hong Kong. ATM usage is absolutely mandatory. Which is interesting considering you can use the Octopus card in many places. It's a card for public transport (trains, ferrys, parking spots, convenience stores, and other small shops).

Direct debit systems are everywhere too, but it's still a very cash-centric society, and ironically they just don't have ATMs everywhere so most major bank houses may have 15 of them lined up next to each other on the ground floor...or in many train stations you will see a heavy concentration too. And the lines at rush hour can be quite mad!

Regardless, cash, and the ATM, is king.

Australia is another place heavy on cash and ATM (or cashpoint as we say) usage. What is interesting here is that the most common bill is the $50. Our cash is very cool btw, it's plastic and you can't tear it. No seriously, you can't tear it! It's waterproof too naturally which is handy when it gets returned you to at a bar that may have drinks spilt on it! It's colour coded, and comes in different sizes to aid the blind. It's basically light years ahead of the greenback.

In all honestly though, I speak for a large portion of Asia and India when I talk about ATM usage. It's really all about the economy in these locals markets all over this part of the world being cash-driven. Credit card acceptence is common, but not when you are at the local markets - and there's more of that kind of economy than anything else.

I should clarify, I realise your top 10 lists bank tellers for cash withdrawal rather than ATMs! I think I must have read it too fast between eating dim sum. But regardless, hope it is more insight than you probably wanted! :)

#2. It's more comfortable for me to talk on a land-line phone than a cell phone, so the land-lines still ring at my house, baby!

#10. I still buy CDs exclusively. I'm a music junkie and collector so I like to have all the cover art and liner notes with my music. Above all that, I like to have a lossless copy of my music that I can re-rip in any format I want should a hard drive or MP3 player fail. It will be a sad day for me if/when they stop selling physical copies of music/movies.
