Ecological Decline of Newspapers
Ed Kohler

Steve Rubel has some interesting thoughts today on whether today's eco-conciousness, which is partly driven by rising gas prices, may make people reconsider whether they really need a print newspaper delivered to their door every day.

Put that together with the ever-increasing quality of online experiences - including mobile - and the choice is becoming more and more clear to many.

In fact, I read Rubel's post this morning on my Treo Smartphone while sitting in a hotel lobby that had stacks of today's local newspaper. It made me wonder what I could do to prevent hotels from dropping a newspaper on my door every day.

Similar thoughts are popping up regarding delivery of yellow pages, unsolicited junk mail, and just about anything that takes time to process at home while making people wonder, "why am I getting this at all?"

I think you will find those major content providers (i.e. old media) will be the big players in the new media. Whether or not newspapers are outdated is another thing... and we all must remember that online media isn't exactly green either!

So where do you get your headlines from? most people will start answering "online news portals".

The elements of brand and trust will be 2 major componenets of traffic online. From facebook, second life, bbc, fox, google, coca-cola etc etc... Big players have the interesting content and it all comes down to whether they get it in yime...

Here, here. I used to work at one of the big directory companies and you wouldnt believe how much goes into those print directory drops. Its not just the paper and glue itself, its the transport costs that contribute to their atrocious carbon footprint.

Well, we are starting to see newspaper print becoming ever smaller and smaller-- to conserve on paper and costs.

They get a two fold benefit. The benefit from using less paper, and the smaller size also gives the added benefit of even lower transport costs!
