I've written previously about the role link popularity plays in search engine rankings, and about the problems newspapers cause themselves when they bury archives behind passwords and/or paid sections. Here is another example of why this is a problem.

I noticed that Technology Evangelist has picked up some new traffic from searches related to Simon Delivers, so I took a look at what was drawing them in. Here is a Google search result for the term [simon delivers groceries] where Technology Evangelist currently ranks as the 7th result and 5th site in the organic search results:

We launched the Technology Evangelist blog six months ago this past Friday, and have learned a lot about blogging over the past 180+ days. Here are a ten things we learned and/or wish we knew before we started:

One factors search engines use to determine what a page is about is the text used in the links to the page. This is the anchor text, in HTML terms. For example this link to Yahoo used the terms "this link" as the anchor text. If a lot of sites all linked to Yahoo using the same two words as anchor text for their links, Yahoo would move up in search engine rankings for that obscure and not particularly relevant term.

The New York Times ran a story on April 9th by Steve Lohr titled "This Boring Headline is Written for Google"  about newspapers altering their article's headline copy to make them more search engine friendly. The story explains that search engines like Google use the terms within headlines to help determine the topic of a given web page, so creating a headline that's keyword rich rather than a creative play on words could generate additional visitors to the article through search engines.

You probably know by now that you need to claim and ping your blog to start moving up the Technorati ranks. But what else should you know about this blog search engine?

April 3, 2006

Technorati is now tracking MySpace blogs, which means MySpace users can now claim their blogs on Technorati. MySpace users now have a chance to become as addicted to Technorati as they are to MySpace!

Two months ago, I posted an article called,
"Technorati
Link Optimization: Getting What You Deserve
" that explained how the
Technorati blog search engine uses inbound links to blogs to decide how
important a blog is, and thus how high to rank the site. In my opinion, if a
site chooses to link to you, you should deserve credit for the link to you
site on blog search engines like Technorati. I figured out a way to optimize
the Technorati ranking of this site by detecting who's linking to the site,
and pinging sites that hadn't already pinged themselves.

I've had a few conversations lately with colleagues about the critical role inbound links play in determining a web page's ranking in search engines. One link building strategy that consistently comes out of conversations like this is reciprocal linking, as in, "if you link to me, I'll link to you."

Yesterday's post on Technorati Optimization has fueled some stinging commentary from a few sites:

January 26, 2006
Ed Kohler

Anyone who has a blog and is familiar with Technorati is probably very aware of their blog's ranking on the popular blog search engine. If you're not careful, watching a blog's ranking fluctuate may lead to carpal tunnel from clicking the refresh button. Every blogger obsesses about this at some level, including respected bloggers like Steve Rubel, Frank Gruber and blogging newbie, Guy Kawasaki.

Occasionally, friends of mine ask me if they should consider buying lots and lots of domain names as a marketing strategy to drive more traffic to their web sites. They theorize that many domains names will cast a wider net on the web for prospective site visitors. Is this an effective online marketing strategy? In most cases, no.

Ranking high is search engine results is one of the most rewarding web marketing strategies available. But how is it actually done?
