What is the SJ8?

SJCAM is a Swiss company based in Bristol, England. They manufacture high quality mobile cameras and SJCs, SJCAMs, SJ2s and SJ2X. The SJ8 is a new style of camera.

Let’s start with the specs of the SJ8, and what’s inside?

The main features of the SJ8 are the Full-Frame CMOS and 3-axis gimbals. The cam module has a size of SJ8, from 24.5cm to 44cm (2.6-inches) and features an f/1.8 lens.

SJCAM is very keen on getting a camera out for use in action. When they first announced the SJ8, they said that it would be a full-frame DSLR camera, and it was.

One of their key selling points is the 4K footage they can upload to YouTube.

The cam module has a full-frame CMOS, with 16.1million effective pixels (4.7 million according to the Centre for Photographers and OIS Research).

The camera will have a f/1.8 aperture, which is good for landscapes. The aperture is just the same as that of the Full-frame sensor, so it’s likely that you’ll get slightly more than 4EV at f/1.8. The ability to shoot at up to 3K is very impressive indeed, especially if you’re planning to shoot above-average footage.

The camera has a sensor module with a Bayer filter that is designed to create a slice of image in the middle. This is called the ND filter. It’s really an adaptable filter that offers granular control over exposure. That’s great news for anyone wishing to have less granular control over exposure.

The camera has a sensitivity of ISO100, but there’s also a setting that allows you to shoot at up to 4K.

SJCAM also claims to have up to 50k on offer for a collaboration mode. This will allow you to capture raw files from your smartphone as you normally do. There’s also a code to do so via YouTube.

Build and Handling

The SJ8 is the first camera SJCAM has launched to feature a sensor with a pixel size of 1/3.5 or 1/16.2. The lens has a diameter of 1/3.5.

The back body is made of plastic and has a flat bezel. It’s very comfortable to hold and use.

The big camera has a monopod grip around its centre. I’m not sure if the camera comes with a similar grip but it’s nice and tight. It makes it easy to control the camera with the phone, or tablet.

When you look at the grip you can see that it’s a rubberised grip. The rubber grip is very firm and secure and when you rotate the grip you can see how it is rotating.

The camera comes with a 5-inch touch screen. It’s big, and it has a screen protector on it. I like it very much and want to use it in the future.

Performance

To be honest with consumers, I was quite surprised by the camera’s performance. It’s a camera that has been designed to take images. It’
